AROUND THE CLASSES

Welcome back! This week in Turtles and Dolphins we have been settling in and making new friends. We talked about holidays and painted pictures of them. We have also talked about what we have enjoyed most about our first week back.

We have had a wonderful first few days in Year 1. The children have picked up the new routines really quickly which has been fantastic. We discussed and created our own class rules. We found out about Sea Lions and how they are very energetic, sociable creatures and curious about the world around them. We have enjoyed reading ‘Dinosaur goes to school’, ‘Have you seen the crocodile?’, ‘Thank you for looking after our pet’s and the ‘Book with no pictures’ had us laughing to finish the day. Everyone has chosen a book from our class library to bring home and enjoy, they can swap these books next week. They have had great fun at playtimes and we played some games on the top playground ready for PE to start next week. Have a super weekend!

Welcome to Year 2! Mrs Stephens, Kay and I (Mrs Stanbury) are really looking forward to working with you over the coming year. We’ve had a great first few days settling in and getting used to school routines. We worked together to make our class rules: be kind, be respectful, be ready and be safe. We decorated our new pencil cases and made birthday cards to give out over the year. We even managed to squeeze in a bit of Maths. Next Friday we are looking forward an outdoor learning session.

This year’s harvest festival for key stage 2 will be on Wednesday 8th October at 2.00pm. Years 4 and 6 have already taken words home and years 3 and 5 will receive theirs next week. Any help with learning these lyrics would be gratefully appreciated as always. If your child requires any sort of costume you will be informed shortly but it will be straightforward. On the subject of which, if you happen to have a bee, worm, mouse or spider costume we could borrow that would be very helpful.

A warm welcome to Year 4 and I hope you all had a restful summer. It’s been lovely getting to know the Year 4’s this week and we have been doing a range of creative activities to ease us in gently whilst getting to grips with routines and expectations for the year ahead. We have begun learning about place value in Maths as well as learning the names of different quadrilaterals that our table groups are named after. We did some postcard writing in English, we learnt about children’s rights in Values and how the children can use these responsibly, we practised our joined writing and letter formation and the children also took part in some outdoor learning activities based around team building. A reminder if you haven’t already, we will start reading The Witches by Roald Dahl on Monday. Please can your child bring in a copy of the book. Thank you!

Year 5 have had a fantastic start to the year, settling in well and getting to know each other through a range of activities. We wrote imaginative “My Holiday” poems, all about the wild and wonderful things we didn’t do! Inspired by the book Wonder by R.J. Palacio, we also created self-portraits to display proudly in our classroom. As part of our reading journey, we explored our own ‘reading identities’ and made colourful posters for the front page of our reading journals. This has set us up brilliantly for next week, when we’ll begin diving into our new units and topics.

Year 6 have come back with a great attitude towards learning and have settled well. They have been learning all the new systems and have done a variety of subjects to get them back in the swing of it all. In Maths, they will be learning about place value with numbers up to 10 million: this involves ordering, writing in words, rounding, placing numbers on a number line and changing the value of numbers by set amounts. In Literacy, they have read ‘The Princess’ Blankets’ and have started to look at the vocabulary before learning the story. In Science, they did a quiz about ‘Living things and their habitats’ and in Geography they have started looking at climate change. It’s been a busy, but very positive few days. Homework will be set this week – the focus on routines and expectations for spelling and making sure that they can login and access maths.co.uk for maths. One more week until residential and we’re all very excited. Thank you for all the SOE3 forms back so far – look out for/ ask in advance for medication forms if needed.
