AROUND THE CLASSES
This week in Turtles and Dolphins we have been learning about rock pools. We started off having a discussion around what we already know about them. We read the story ‘Sally and the limpet’ to find out more about the creatures that we might find in the rock pools. On Thursday we talked more about what we might find in the rock pools off the slipway ready for our trip on Monday. (Please remember to wear wellies to school and bring a packed lunch). Today we visited our new classes.
In Year 1 this week we have enjoyed reading our book- How to hide a lion at school. We’ve looked at verbs a lot and have written sentences and underlined the verb. In Maths we have started a new topic- Money! This week we looked at the different coins and how much they are worth. Then we had a go at some coin rubbing. We loved making our salads in DT after we evaluated some fruit salads last week! We decided what we did and didn’t like to help us decide what to do this week. Thank you for all of the boxes- we are so excited to make our castles on Monday!
Year 2 had a great time on Wednesday morning at the Atlantic Racquet Centre. They took part in lots of activities with other local schools. Everyone tried really hard and had fun meeting new people. On Thursday, they had their Design and Technology Day where they were able to design and make wind-powered cars. They looked at different ways of attaching axles and wheels to their cardboard boxes before deciding on their finished design. In Maths, they have been looking at position and direction and worked with a partner to direct their character around a map. It will be another action-packed day on Friday as they will be spending the morning in their new classroom for September with their new teacher. In the afternoon, they are looking forward to an outdoor learning session.
Year 6 have been producing their hip hop track. They have created the drum beat, base line, chord progression and composed a melody. They have them arranged the track and dropped the bass. They are now composing an original rap to add to the mix. Hopefully they will be laying down this vocal next week and you should be able to hear some of the finishes tracks in the leaver’s assembly. Years 4 and 5 are concluding their music studies this year by considering orchestral instruments. Years 4 listened to Peter and the Wolf and Year 5 The Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra. They will be learning the names, sections and position of different instruments within am orchestra.
Year 3 have had a fantastic week! On Tuesday, we went on a brilliant trip to Exeter Museum, where we took part in a range of hands-on activities to deepen our understanding of ancient Egypt. We discovered how to mummify a person, played the ancient board game senet, and examined a variety of fascinating artefacts. In Maths, we explored the properties of 2D and 3D shapes and we learnt how to describe their sides, vertices and faces. In English, we used expanded noun phrases to describe the many treasures found in Tutankhamun’s tomb. We then stepped into the shoes of Howard Carter and wrote diary entries capturing the wonder and excitement of discovering the tomb for the first time. In PE, we put all the skills we’ve been developing over the past few weeks into practice by playing our first tag rugby matches. Everyone showed great teamwork and determination! In Science, we investigated different types of magnets and discovered that magnets have two poles and we learnt how they attract and repel.
In Year 4 this week, the children have been doing a range of assessments to consolidate their learning from the year. Apart from these assessments, the children have been learning about different shapes in Maths, including different triangles and different quadrilaterals and they created a leaflet where they wrote down the different properties of each shape to help remember them. In Science, we learnt how different solids don’t allow sound to travel through them easily and that these solids are called sound insulators. The children then used this knowledge to design a bedroom that would be very peaceful and quiet using sound insulator materials. In History, we looked at why Britain was named ‘The Workshop of the World’ during the Industrial Revolution. The children also took part in a transition morning where they met their new class teacher for next year!
Year 5 had an amazing trip on the ferry to Instow. They did sketching on the beach and then had an ice-cream. Thank you to the parents and grandparents for helping with this. We have then been putting all the work into our ‘Where my wellies take me’ book. Next week we will visit the maritime museum and go on a history walk. We went down to the pond in school and did some watercolour painting. In maths we have started to do our end of term assessments and getting ready for moving up into Y6.
Year 6 had a great time sailing on Wednesday – the weather was on their side and they had a lot of fun. In history, they have completed work on the Mayan Civilisation and continued with light in Science – making a periscope and thinking about how light travels in straight lines as well as how we see colour. The play is coming along – all costumes should now be in school – they are needed on Monday so please make sure your child has sorted them. Many of the class have been out on Transition days again this week and seemed to have enjoyed them, met new people and are excited for September. Please complete the google form about transport to The Wake Park, if you haven’t already, so that final arrangements can be made.
