From Jeremy Cooper and all the children and staff

This week in Turtles and Dolphins we have been learning about our bedtime routines. We talked about the things we do to get ready for bed and how important it is to go to sleep. In groups we designed some new pyjamas and we had some interesting ideas! On Thursday we had a visit from Lorna who is a dentist. She talked to us about how important it is to look after our teeth.

In Year 1 this week we have started a new book, My Day at the Zoo. We have drawn our own story maps for the book and put some actions to it! In Maths we have been looking at greater than, less than and equal to and have now started ordering numbers. We had some great discussions in our topic lesson as we were learning about the Sahara Desert and how it compares to Antarctica. We looked at how camels are adapted to live there and looked at where it is on a map.

This week in Year 2, they have been acting out a new adventure in the style of Traction Man with their own toys. They have written the story to go alongside this and are publishing them to make books to go on the writing wall in the corridor. In Maths, they have been ordering and comparing 2-digit numbers and counting in 2s, 5s and 10s. In their Science work, they have continued to learn about animals they would find in a woodland habitat. Everyone is looking forward to a trip to Rosemoor next week, where they will be able to continue their learning about habitats. In PE, they have been getting to grips with the basics of tag rugby and have been learning how to run with a rugby ball whilst trying to avoid being tagged.

Year 3 have started their new writing sequence based on the book ‘Interview with a tiger’. We wrote questions we would like to ask David Attenborough and then made inferences about the tiger’s personality after listening to his interview. In maths we have looked at adding and subtracting 3-digit numbers with no exchanges needed. Our geography session this week looked at rainforests around the world and we created a poster about the Amazon rainforest. Science this week looked at how the distance of light source changes the size of the shadow. In dance we continued our rainforest learning, thinking about how we would move through a rainforest. We enjoyed eating our apple chutney (made in last week’s outdoor learning session) with cheese and crackers. We have been busy learning our harvest song and look forward to performing this to you at next week’s harvest festival.

In Year 4 this week, the children have started a new sequence in English based on the book Little Evie in the Wild Wood. They have also watched the video “The Girl and the Fox” where they will eventually write the story of the video. The children practised writing some sentences about the video which included suspense! In Maths, we have been rounding numbers to the nearest 10, 100 and 1000. In Geography, we learnt about some examples of sustainable development in Nepal and Exminster and the children compared the two. In Science, the children measured the temperature of water outside and inside the classroom and will now present these results as a line graph. In PE, the children continued working on their footwork and took part in a team game. In Values, we looked at what the term ‘bystander’ means.

In English, Year 5 have written and edited their own alternative versions of The Tear Thief, and we have now begun publishing them in our best handwriting. In maths, we’ve been exploring powers of ten, comparing and ordering numbers up to one million, and tackling the challenge of negative numbers. Science saw us investigating filtering and sieving through hands-on experiments, while in geography, we rose to the challenge of using 4- and 6-figure grid references to locate landmarks on an OS map of Southampton – including where the ship Marco Polo is berthed. Our reading sessions continued with Holes, and the children impressed with their confident and expressive group reading aloud to the class. In PE, some thrilling mini handball matches kept everyone active and engaged, and in computing, we developed our vector drawing skills by learning how to modify shapes to create imaginative images. Finally, in values, the class had thoughtful discussions about what we would do if we found lost money and the importance of making responsible choices.

Year 6 have had a busy week completing their maths unit on Place Value, including using negative numbers, and starting to think about methods for the four operations. In Literacy, they have planned their own stories and have begun drafting. They are trying to work on using punctuation and editing skills, to make sure that their readers can follow all the details. In science, they have learnt more about classification by making keys for a selection of animals using scientific vocabulary. In PE they enjoyed developing their handball skills. They have also had time in the art studio working on drawing skills, completing a detailed pencil drawing of a dragon’s eye.
