It has been lovely to see all the children enjoying the field and the excitement it brings.  There is limited shade on the field so please ensure children come to school with sun protection applied (crazy I know, but we are not allowed to apply it!) and a sun hat. Sun glasses are only permitted if your child needs them for hay fever protection or an identified medical needs and you have informed us by emailing admin@appledoreprimary.co.uk

On Sunday 4th May, starting at 10am, Appledore Lifeboat is celebrating its 200th birthday with many activities throughout the day, including children from Appledore School singing from approximately 12.30pm. All children in key stage two are welcome to join the singing.

AROUND THE CLASSES

This week in Turtles and Dolphins we have been reading the fairy tale ‘The Three Billy Goats Gruff’. We talked about what we already knew about the story and then we read it. Afterwards, we acted it out. We have made bridges with lots of different construction kits and we have changed our role play so that we can continue to act the story out. We talked about what the troll looks like and then we made Wanted posters.

In year 1 this week we have carried on with our Oceans topic where we recapped the 5 oceans and where they are on the map. Then we looked at the different layers of the ocean and what animals we might find in each layer. In Writing we have been looking at writing simple sentences where we remember our capital letters, finger spaces and full stops and then went on to using conjunctions to link some sentences together. In Science we have started our new topic of Everyday Materials. We looked at some different materials and then using a feely bag the children had to guess what material something was made out from the clues that Mrs Wilkins gave them. They were brilliant at this and were using great words such as flexible and waterproof!

Year 2 have had another great week. In their Geography work, they looked at how different artists depict the weather in their paintings. They painted their own pictures to show different types of weather. In their Science work, they looked at how different forces can change the shape of some materials. They had fun playing a game with modelling clay to use different forces to make a duck. They are continuing to learn about materials on Friday for outdoor learning when they will be using different materials to make a zip wire for a teddy. In English, they have been writing letters about what the dragons might get up to in the school. In Maths, they are continuing to learn about fractions. Well done to everyone completing their Maths.co.uk homework, it really helps to support your learning in class.

Seahunter Class (year 3) have had a great week! In Maths, we learnt how to find fractions of amounts using bar models and division. We then applied our knowledge to a variety of problem solving and reasoning questions. In English, we used adverbial phrases to sequence events from the story Small in the City, and then we wrote a lost poster for the missing cat in the book. In Geography, we learnt all about the different features of rivers and watched a video showing the River Severn all the way from the source to the mouth. We then created our own illustrated glossaries of all the new vocabulary we had learnt. In Science, we researched the functions of different parts of a plant and then compared some plants and we observed lots of similarities and differences. In PE, we had our second tennis lesson, and in our other PE lesson we took part in some relay races and played some games to improve our agility.

In year 4 this week, the children have been learning and remembering some of the pages in Leon and the Place Between and they practised writing some sentences using expanded noun phrases to help add precise detail to their writing. In Maths, we partitioned decimals into tenths and hundredths and we took part in some problem solving activities where the children had to guess my number using clues. In Science, the children learnt what an appliance is and they sorted appliances into electrical and non-electrical. We also made some electrical circuits where the children made a lightbulb light, a buzzer buzz and a motor spin. In Values, the children learnt about what it means to be inclusive and we discussed our similarities and differences as a class.

This week year 5 has been finding out more about the ship Ernest Shackleton sailed on (The Endurance), the journey they made to Antarctica, and the dogs they took.  In maths we have started the unit of work on shape and looked at how to measure angles using a protractor.   In science we have focused on habitats, extending this into our outdoor learning session.  In our geography lesson we found out more about the 29,000 plastic ducks which got dropped into the ocean when they fell off a cargo ship and the journey they made due to the ocean’s currents.   All enjoyed their tennis and cricket session with the coaches.

Year 6 have been busy refining skills in maths this week and have worked hard on their reading skills. As well as this, they have had some fantastic games of rounders where skills have greatly improved – we’ve gone from one or 2 rounders being scored by a couple of people to over half the class scoring and many others just missing out. They have also enjoyed tennis and cricket and their geography work about Lundy. We have been impressed by how well they have been working, despite the heat, and how focussed they are on securing their skills. Next Tuesday afternoon, we have some First Aid Training to look forward to, so be prepared to be wrapped in bandages and find out about the recovery position and CPR (they will have the chance to use dummies to test this out).
