This week in Turtles and Dolphins we have continued to celebrate Chinese New Year. On Tuesday we flew to China and had a great time sightseeing and tasting some more Chinese food. We have also compared China to Appledore. We have drawn pictures of the animals and printed pictures of horses. Today we interviewed some of the characters from the story.
In Year 1 this week we have started our new topic, Coasts. We have started by looking at maps and talking about how they are from a bird’s eye view. We looked at the school on Google Earth and identified lots of different parts of the school! We then had a go at creating our own maps of the classroom and even started creating a group map to create our own town. In Maths we are looking at numbers 20-50 and have started by identifying the tens and ones in a number. In Writing we have started a new book, ‘What happens when…’ and have enjoyed writing our own questions in the style of the book. We also had Art with Abby this week where the children did some printing. They created their own Mandala patterns to print and used brayers to transfer the print.
Welcome back Year 2 and we hope you had a relaxing half term break. In English, we have started looking at a new book about dinosaurs called ‘Creature Features’. They have enjoyed looking at the colourful illustrations and answering questions about dinosaurs using the book. In Maths, they have continued with the multiplication and division topic by looking at doubling and halving alongside the 2x table and division facts. Well done if they are practising at home – some are getting really speedy with their recall. This half term they are comparing where they live to another part of the world. They started this by learning the names of the 7 continents. They were very excited to start learning how to play the p-bones (plastic trombones) this week. Everyone can now put the instrument together and pack it away safely. They started to make a sound using the mouthpiece and we were impressed by how many managed this with their first try.
In Year 4 this week, the children have read our new English explanation text Until I Met Dudley where they learnt about how everyday appliances work. The children have practised using conjunctions in their writing to explain how a machine works. In Maths, we have begun learning about fractions where we have spent the week understanding the whole and calculating fractions of an amount. In Computing, we learnt in e-safety about how to spot if one of our friends is being cyberbullied. In Geography, we learnt about the different layers of the Earth. In PE, we practised different jumps in gymnastics and how to land these well as well as learning different ball skills outside. The children also started their Royal Society Project where some visitors came in to talk about taking care of the birds!
This week in Year 5 literacy, we watched videos of mysterious new planets and became space explorers, writing detailed and descriptive space logs using what we’ve learned from diary writing – the children were imaginative and creative throughout. In maths, we completed our fractions unit and are ready to start learning about decimals next week. In SPaG, we focused on using commas correctly. In science, we began our new topic on animals, including humans, learning about the human life cycle and the different stages of life. In geography, we started our volcanoes unit, focusing specifically on Hiemaey in Iceland. We also had a visit from the police, where we all had a turn at using the speed gun in preparation for next week. A great first week back after half term!
