This week in Turtles and Dolphins we have continued to learn about the Arctic. We have looked at it on a map using Google Earth. We have found out and written fact files about Husky Dogs and Arctic Wolves. We have also printed pictures of Arctic animals. On Tuesday we made some biscuits and on Wednesday we decorated them with a snow theme.
In Year 1 this week we have been learning more about Florence Nightingale and how she changed nursing. One of the things we have been talking about is how she made the hospitals cleaner, so we discussed the importance of this and have started our own investigation! We had 2 pieces of bread, we touched one with dirty hands and we touched the other with clean hands. Now we are checking on them each day to see if anything has happened! In Writing we have been using the conjunction ‘and’ to link sentences together. We wrote some great sentences about what we might do in different weather. In PE we have been carrying on with gymnastics and the children loved getting the big equipment out in the hall this week! We had a go at making the different shapes we have been learning on the equipment.
Year 2 enjoyed an outdoor learning session last Friday where they learnt all about lifecycles. This linked to their science work in class all about humans and other animals. In the classroom, they thought about what human babies and puppies need and asked lots of questions about this. In English, they continued to read the book about Amelia Earhart and made a timeline of her life. They have finished their learning about money in Maths and are now moving on to multiplication and division. In Year 2, children need to know the 2, 5 and 10 times tables so if they wanted to get a head start, they could practise at home. This game can help: https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/hit-the-button Choose the times tables option and then either 2, 5 or 10 times tables. In their History work, they learnt more about Grace Darlings and thought about some of the reasons why she may have carried out her rescue.
Year 3 matched different promises to the professional and roles of those who make them. Year 4 looked at how Muslims celebrate Eid. Year 5 listened to a range of hymns and Christian songs to find references to God being holy and loving. Year 6 wrote free verse to express their awe and wonder at the beauty of creation and to ask questions about how it came about and why. They did this whilst listening to Holst.
Year 3 have started their new text for writing which is based on the book ‘If all the world were’ by Joseph Coelho. We wrote questions and made statements about the images we saw when using a kaleidoscope; we put these together to make a display. We also made a booklet about how to manage feelings. We have been multiplying a 2-digit number by a single digit in maths, looking at different strategies to find the correct answer. Great fun in science learning about how bones and muscles support our bodies to keep up upright. We made bionic hands to explore how our fingers move with the use of bones and muscles. We used primary sources to identify Marie Curie’s achievements and begin to understand why these are important for the world. Another good week of swimming at the pool.
In Year 4 this week, the children have learnt how to multiply a 2 and 3 digit number by a 1 digit number and will move on to learn division methods and strategies. In English, we have planned a story as a class called Lila and the Whispering Clouds and we will write this together next week in preparation for when the children write their own story. In History, we learnt what a shopping high street used to look like in 1918 and compared this to today. We also looked at why convenience food was introduced in the 1950s and how this then changed people’s diets. In Science, we looked at the results for our tooth decay experiment where we looked at which boiled eggs had more decay than others after being soaked in different drinks for a week. In Computing, we recorded and edited sound using Wavepad.
This week in Year 5 has been full of exciting learning across the curriculum. In literacy, we have continued writing our plague diaries, concentrating on making them historically accurate and using emotive language to show how our characters might have felt. In maths, we have been working with fractions, including converting improper fractions to mixed numbers and vice versa, as well as ordering fractions. In science, we took part in an interactive online space workshop, which everyone really enjoyed. In history, we learned about oracle bones and worked in groups to write and perform short play scripts. We also had a visit from the police, who spoke to us about speed awareness and staying safe. In PE, we have been developing our gymnastics skills by practising forward rolls and learning how to perform a handstand safely.
