Newsletter for the week ending Friday 17th July
And that’s the end of another year! Thank you Year 6 for your leavers’ assembly today and we wish you every success at your new schools. A large number of our Year 6 children have been here for 8 years and it has been a pleasure and a privilege to be part of every journey of every child in the year group.
Atlantic won the House Cup this term and the scores were as follows. Arctic (blue) 1205, Pacific (red) 1214, Indian (yellow) 1342, and Atlantic (green) 1476. We will arrange a non-uniform day in September for Atlantic House. Well done Atlantic, because it’s been a while and one year 6 pupil in Atlantic was correct when they said, ‘… the last time we won that I was in Reception class’!
Yesterday also saw our Appledore’s Got Talent final. Following stringent rounds of auditions, judged by peers, each year group offered up their entry today and we were treated to a musical, dancing, comedy and magical treat. Congratulations to all the entrants and yesterday’s finalists and many house points were won. We also handed out the prizes for the PTFA sunflower growing competition wit the tallest getting close to 2m tall!
We say goodbye to Cathy Ley today and thank her for everything she has done. Working in Reception Class, Cathy is one of the lucky few who know nearly every child in the school at any point and all of those children have been lucky to have received Cath’s care and expertise. We all wish Cathy well in her new job.

AROUND THE CLASES
This week in Turtles and Dolphins we have been reflecting on the past year. We have talked about and drawn pictures of what we have enjoyed. We have talked about what we are looking forward to in the holidays. As part of our inspirational value we have also talked about what we want to be when we grow up. Yesterday, we made some fishcakes and cupcakes and we had a little tea party in the woods.
In Year 1 this week we have been busy finishing off our Science topic- Plants. We went on a plant hunt around the school to see what we could find. We worked with partners and had a checklist to tick off the trees and flowers we found. Then, as a class, we worked together to create a big picture of a sunflower. We labelled the parts of the flower we have been learning and discussed why each part was important. In Maths we have been finishing off learning about money and have been looking at telling the time. This is something we have discussed all throughout the year so they were brilliant at recognising both o’clock and half past times! We have had a fantastic year where we have seen the children grow in confidence and love their learning. Thank you for all your hard work Year 1, and thank you parents for all your support.
What a brilliant year we have had with your children in Year 2! We are so proud of all of them for the progress they have made throughout the year. In English, we have finished the year by looking at some seaside poetry. They read a rhyming poem and had a go at writing their own rhyming couplets. In Maths, they have been revising division and dividing by 2, 5 and 10 in particular. Well done to everyone who auditioned for Appledore’s Got Talent: we were very impressed with their bravery to stand up in front of the class. Congratulations to Eva who went through to the final after the class vote. Thank you all for your support, kind words and generous gifts. We (Mrs Stanbury, Mrs Stephens and Kay) wish you a wonderful summer break with your families.
Year 3 completed their research on inspirational Christians to complete the unit on why some people try to make the world a better place. They then sang Frere Jacque in a four part round before learning how to play it on the recorder using the two new notes they had learnt. Year 4 compared a Christian Wedding with a Hindu one and then looked at a Humanist naming ceremony to see how religious and non religious traditions mark rites of passage. Year 5 had a fascinating talk form our visiting Humanist speaker to help them further understand what it means to be a Humanist in Britain today. Year 6 looked at the story of Job and reflected on what we can learn from the story. They then assembled all their beautifully drawn musical instruments into an orchestra and listened to music composed especially for the instrument they had focused on
It has been a great week, a fantastic term, and an amazing year. Well done Year 3 for all the hard work and progress you have made this year. We had a wonderful swimming session at Skern Lodge this week; a big thank you to Mrs O. who kindly helped us and even got into the pool!! (very brave!). All work books have been updated and either sent home or passed onto Y4 for next year’s learning. Thank you so much for the wonderful end of term gifts given to the Y3 team; it was very generous and thoughtful of you all. Have a brilliant summer holiday with your families and I look forward to seeing you pass me every morning, on your way into Y4, in September.
I can’t believe this is the final week in Year 4 for our class. What an incredible term it has been and I know that Mrs Avery would agree it’s been a wonderful year for them. Individually, each child works incredibly hard, has a positive attitude and together, they are excellent problem solvers and have a fantastic sense of humour. The final week has been busy. We enjoyed Appledore’s Got Talent which the children who represented us won(!), finished off our final units, including: our non-fiction work on David Attenborough and Greta Thunberg, position and direction in maths – who knew Battleships could be part of learning, sound in science, the Victorians in history and our values work. We finished our last swimming sessions which really showed the improvement in technique and stamina. Miss Athey and I can only celebrate how outstanding the class have been and know that they will continue being role models for the rest of the school. They have done us proud. What a fantastic way to end an amazing year in Year 5! We are incredibly proud to say that we have now completed all of our curriculum units across every subject – a huge achievement! Well done to all of the children for their hard work, determination and enthusiasm throughout the year. Our final week has been packed with fun activities and celebrations. We were lucky enough to attend a sports festival at ARC alongside four other schools, where the children enjoyed taking part in tennis, badminton and pickleball. They represented the school brilliantly and showed excellent teamwork and sportsmanship. We also had our final cricket session with the fantastic coaches, who have been brilliant throughout the programme. The children have developed so many new skills and have thoroughly enjoyed every session. Back in school, we took part in an end-of-year quiz, which was great fun, and enjoyed Appledore’s Got Talent, where it was wonderful to see the confidence, creativity and talents of so many children. To round off the year, we celebrated together with ice poles outside in the sunshine. Finally, a huge thank you from Miss Truepenny and Mrs Hughes for your incredible kindness and generosity. We are so grateful for all of the thoughtful gifts and lovely cards we have received – they are very much appreciated and have truly touched us.We would like to wish all of our Year 5 families a wonderful, restful and enjoyable summer holiday. Thank you for all of your support throughout the year, and we look forward to seeing the children continue to thrive in Year 6! Have a fantastic summer!
What a year it has been! Year 6 enjoyed their trip to The Wake Park this week. They had a lot of fun and everyone had a good time. They have cleared the room of all their things, prepared their Leavers Assembly and enjoyed activities for the last time – anything we find left behind (hopefully not too much) will be left in the school office for collection. As a final message from the Year 6 team – we’d like to say that we are confident that you all have some great skills moving forward to secondary school; you’re ready for the next steps in life and you should all be proud of what you’ve achieved during your time at Appledore. There are so many opportunities waiting for you – we can’t wait to see what you do next. All the staff at Appledore wish you every success. So goodbye and good luck – be true to yourselves and always be kind!
