AROUND THE CLASSES

This week in Turtles and Dolphins we had a great time at the rock pools on Monday. I think everyone caught at least one crab! On Wednesday we started to find out about Lundy Island and on Thursday Francis came to talk to us about what lives on Lundy. We looked at pictures of puffins and had a go at drawing them.

In Year 1 this week we have been looking at how we can change the story How to Hide a Lion at School. We changed where they went on the school trip and thought of funny places the lion could hide! In Maths we have started learning about time and using language such as before, after, yesterday and tomorrow. We loved making our castles in our topic lesson, the children thought of great ways to include the features we have been learning about! The class also showed amazing behaviour when walking to the church for our Open the Book assembly on Thursday. Well done Year 1!

Year 2 have had another great week. In English, they have been reading a poetry book about the seaside and tried putting the lines from a poem in order. In Maths, they are revisiting Times tables and making sure they know the facts for the 2, 5 and 10 times tables before they move into year 3. There is a link on Google classroom for Times Tables Rockstars for them to keep practising at home. They enjoyed watching the Y6 play on Wednesday and they were excited to walk to the Baptist Church on Thursday morning for the final Open the Book Assembly. Everyone is looking forward to the trip next week to Quince Honey Farm.

Year 6 laid down the vocal for their hip hop track by recording their original raps into Yu Studio. They are just tweaking the arrangement and doing the mix before we listen to them and appraise them next week and then debut them in the Leaver’s Assembly. Year 5 looked out the layout of a symphony orchestra and began drawing their own musical instruments so we can collage an orchestra in the classroom. Year 4 imported their live instrumentation from earlier in the year into Yu Studio so they can incorporate it into their cyclic pattern work. Year 3 listened to the Carnival of the Animals by Saint Saens and tried to guess which animal was being portrayed by each piece. There were some high scores as they listened carefully to the tempo and pitch of each piece and identified the instruments being played for each animal.

Seahunter (Year 3) class have had a brilliant week! In Maths, we began a new topic on statistics. We started by interpreting pictograms, then collected our own data and presented the information in our very own pictograms. In English, we planned newspaper articles reporting on the incredible discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb. In Science, we investigated which materials are magnetic and which are not. We were surprised to learn that not all metals are magnetic! In History, we explored what life was like in ancient Egypt for different members of society. We then wrote diary entries imagining a day in the life of someone living in ancient Egypt — from farmers to pharaohs. In DT, we created our own light-up cards using electric circuits. Using bulbs, copper tape, and small batteries, we built circuits and then created our own design for the front of the card.

In Year 4 this week, the children have finished learning about different shapes and have moved onto learning about statistics and position and direction. We looked at different bar charts, pictograms and line graphs and we will also be looking at plotting coordinates. The children have been busy publishing their stories in English and they will be on display in the corridor very shortly once they’re all finished. In Science, we looked at what volume is and what happens to vibrations and sound waves with loud and quiet noise. We watched a video about different birds flying through the sky, including a pigeon, peregrine falcon and a barn owl, which showed how loud or quiet they were. In History, we looked at what steam engines were and how steam engines give power to things like steam trains. In PE, the children have been continuing to develop their football skills and the children watched the Year 6 leaver’s play as well as Appledore’s Got Talent!

Year 5 has been learning about some of the history of Appledore this week. We went to the Maritime Museum for the morning and discovered a lot more about ship/boat building in the village. On Thursday morning we went on a history walk with Mr Terry Bailey. He told us more about the pirates and sea events whilst we walked over the ‘Lookout’ and then some of the history of the buildings as we walked along Irsha Street and the Quay. It has been great learning so much about our local history. We have listened to two authors this week: Emma Swan and Bethany Hughes. It was inspiring to listen to how they seT about writing their books. In maths we have completed our assessment tasks and most have now completed the work for the arts award. We were lucky to watch the Y6 dress rehearsal this week and looking forward to the final of ‘Appledore’s Got Talent.’ We wish the Y5 group good luck with their recorder playing. A reminder will be sent home next week about our fun swimming session at Skern Lodge.

Year 6 have enjoyed performing their play this week – it’s been a lot of fun and there are some great actors amongst them. They have been completing writing in Literacy and doing investigation in maths. It has been a busy time trying to finish work. They have also had their SATs results and performed really well individually, and as a year group – they should all be so proud of their achievements. The final week is next week. Please return any school reading books and remember a bag to carry all the books that will be sent home. Children will still need PE kits.
