Newsletter for the week ending 4th December
Decorations are up and Christmas jumpers were out in force today, so there’s no escaping it! Please read on to find out what has been happening in and around the classes.

This week we have finished off our learning about animals and we have focused on nocturnal animals. We have sorted animals that come out at night and those that come out during the day. Today We went to The Jungle and made some homes for the animals. We have made collages of these animals and painted pictures of them. We have also been busy practicing our Christmas Play
Year 1 have spent a lot of this week outside! On Monday the children really enjoyed our trip to Rosemoor. It was great to take the children out of school and to see them in a different environment. The staff at Rosemoor commented on how well behaved the children were and how excited and enthused they were about learning new things. I was very proud of all the children and how they represented themselves and the school. On Thursday we took part in our last outdoor learning session for this term. Again it was great to see how the children were applying their topic learning in a different environment. My thanks to the outdoor learning team for their support this term.
Lundy Puffins have had another great week. The highlight was definitely the trip to Rosemoor on Monday. They learned about deciduous and evergreen trees and had fun collecting leaves in the gardens. They used the leaves to create lots of different crafts. In the afternoon, they were able to explore some parts of the garden. They all listened well and behaved very well around the gardens. In Maths they have been adding two 2-digit numbers. In English, they have been writing their version of the Augustus and his Smile story. There is some really great writing, so well done everyone! They were excited to start practising their Christmas play and although it is going to be slightly different this year they are very much looking forward to sharing this with you ‘virtually’.

Year 4 this week in Maths have been practising their multiplication and division skills for mixed tables up to 12 x 12. The class has also looked at multiplying and dividing by multiples of 10 and 100. In English, the children have been practising writing using a range of sentence structures. We have looked at simple, compound and complex sentences, as well as fronted adverbials. In Topic, we looked at a Roman invitation written in Latin sent by a lady named Claudia Aelius. The children then wrote their own replies following the same language style. During Science, the children have looked at animal’s teeth and diets, and have researched different animal diets using the chrome books!
Year 5 have completed their stories based on Beowulf this week and have spent a considerable amount of time editing them – they have all made progress in paying attention to punctuation and trying to add interesting details. In Maths, we have been multiplying by 10,100 and 100. Most children have grasped this concept well but need to extend themselves with decimal numbers and become more familiar with this. In Science, we have completed some data analysis on the growth of babies as well as learning about climate zones in our outdoor learning session. The children did a great job at justifying why they thought plants lived in desert areas, tropical rain forests and temperate climates – if you see them examining plants you have at home, that could be why. They have also been thinking about how respect was shown in several short stories that we shared.
This week, in English we’ve been finishing our biographies about Charles Dickens and starting to write the story, ‘A Christmas Carol.’ In maths we are learning to multiply and divide fractions by fractions and integers. On Wednesday afternoon, half of the class did outdoor learning when we made sandbags, did weeding, went inside an Anderson shelter and made and used mulch from a tree in the jungle. In topic we learnt about the Battle of Britain and the planes we used in it. We are learning about light in Science and are finding out the parts of an eye and why each one is important. On Friday, it was Christmas jumper day and the money made was donated went to the Air Ambulance. Reporters: Rosie and Zachary
