This week in Turtles and Dolphins we have returned to learning about the Savannah. On Tuesday we were set the challenge of designing and making a jeep and we had some fantastic ideas. We made some binoculars and on Thursday we went on our very own Safari, we saw lots of animals! To finish off our around the world topic, we compared the Rainforest, Arctic and Savannah to find similarities and differences between the three areas.

Year 1 have had an exciting week this week as we started our new book in Writing- The Slime Book! The children were very excited to look at all of the different types of slime in the book and then we had a go at following the instructions to make the stretchy slime! The next day, we evaluated the instructions and the children thought of amazing reasons as to why they thought the instructions were good and how they could be better. In Maths we have been finishing off Length and Height and had a go at measuring items around the class in centimetres. In Science we have been thinking about our senses. We talked about which body part we use for each sense and then went on a senses walk to see what we could smell, hear, see and feel.

Year 2 have written their own books in the style of ‘Creature Features’. They will be writing them up next week for a display on the writing wall, so please take a look. Everyone tried so hard to include their facts about animals and write like ‘experts’ – well done! In Maths, they have been using balance scales to measure the mass of different objects using cubes and then using grams. They had fun trying to find the lightest and heaviest items that would fit into the balance scale buckets. In their Geography work, they compared their homes to homes from a region in India. Their trombone playing is going well and we will soon be recording a performance to put on Google Classroom to share with you all. They enjoyed a session in the Art Studio on Wednesday to create collages.

Year 3 had a great afternoon this week when a local historian visited the classroom. He showed many amazing photographs of Appledore, comparing places from 100 year ago to today. We now know where Dark Lane was and why so many buildings are no longer there. In our writing this week we have been making sure we can write sentences in the present perfect tense and have completed our unit on fractions in maths. In our science lesson we look at food packaging to find the nutritional value of what we are eating

In Year 4 this week, the children have been learning about equivalent fractions in Maths and they’ve also learnt about how to add and subtract mixed numbers. In English, we have been perfecting our grammar skills, such as using apostrophes, commas after fronted adverbials and our handwriting within a variety of activities and free writes. In History, we looked at the history of New Zealand’s earthquakes and why they get so many. The children presented this data as a line graph in their Geography books to see if they could notice any patterns and trends. In Values, we watched the NSPCC assembly ‘speak out stay safe’ assembly where the children learnt about who to speak to if they weren’t feeling safe. They also learnt how when we get older, our feelings change which may lead to conflict with loved ones, such as parents/carers and siblings. The children had different scenarios to look at and in their pairs, they had to think of possible compromises. In Science, the children took part in outdoor learning where they grouped living things and they also completed a survey around the school about how our environment has changed to support living things.

Its been a very busy and exciting week in Year 5! A group of 20 children successfully completed their Bikeability training – well done to all involved for showing great determination and focus. Another group represented the school at a tag rugby event and performed brilliantly, demonstrating excellent teamwork and sportsmanship. All completed their Spring assessments this week, and we are very proud of the effort and resilience they have shown. In Science, we have been learning more about the human life cycle, exploring the different stages of growth and development. In Geography, we looked in more depth at Iceland, exploring each region and its physical and human features. The children then chose which area they would most like to visit and explained their reasoning. In our Values lessons, we discussed risks and learned about the effects of smoking and vaping. In Gymnastics, the children have been learning how to use the large apparatus safely and have started putting together their own routines using the skills they have developed this term.We also had another visit from the police today. The children used the speed gun again and were awarded certificates for their work on speed awareness in the community

Year 6 have been practising how to find percentages as well as recognising fractions as decimals and percentages. We have continued finding angles in triangles and looking at interior angles of regular polygons. In Literacy, most have had time to complete their celebrations and some have published their work. They have looked at a variety of questions in reading and have been making sure they know what the questions are looking for. In spelling, they have been revising prefixes and how these change words. Booster classes have now finished, but there are lots of resources on google classroom that are still available. Children are encouraged to add their name to a list, in class, if there is anything else that they would like help with.
