From Jeremy Cooper and all the children and staff

This week in Turtles and Dolphins we have been celebrating Easter. On Tuesday a letter arrived from the Easter bunny telling us that he had left us clues and challenges. We had to carry out the challenges and mark the clues on a map. At the end of the hunt there was a treat waiting for us! We have talked about why we celebrate Easter and how some people celebrate it. Today we had a party to say goodbye to Charlie West who is leaving us to go to a new school. You will be missed Charlie!

Year 1 have had a jam-packed week! We have been busy in the classroom making slime and then writing our own instructions for how to make it. In Maths we have been looking at Mass and Volume and have loved finding out the capacity of different containers by measuring how many cups of water filled them up. The highlight of the week had to be our coastal walk though! The children were brilliant at spotting lots of the features we have been learning about in our topic lessons and thoroughly enjoyed the Hockings and play in the park! We want to say a big thank you to the parent volunteers who came along with us. We hope you have a wonderful Easter and enjoy the holidays!

Happy Easter Year 2! Well done for your hard work this term. In English, they have written some amazing stories about a friendship between two animals – great work everyone! In Maths, they have been measuring temperature and reading scales. They were very excited in Geography to complete a Kahoot quiz about the continents and learn about the Taj Mahal. In their Science work, they looked at a tricycle and worked out what it was made from. We wish everyone a relaxing break and look forward to seeing you in a couple of weeks.

Year 3 has had an amazing spring term. All units of work have been completed and great progress made. This week in maths we have continued to work on mass; adding and subtracting grams and kilograms. We have now published our quest stories and these can be read on the display in the main building. Have a relaxing Easter break and we look forward to the summer term.

In Year 4 this week, the children in English published their free write Something Fishy where they applied and consolidated their learning on grammar elements taught throughout the year, for example fronted adverbials, conjunctions, speech and many more. They used some excellent word and phrases as well – I was really blown away with their creativity! In Maths, we have learnt about hundredths as decimals for the first time and we learnt how to divide a 1 and 2 digit number by 10 and 100. We have also been doing lots of times tables work and it’s great to see how motivated they are with learning all the facts up to 12×12. In Computing, the children collected data around the school where they measured sound in different areas using the Chromebooks. In Values, we learnt how a girl’s and boy’s body changes as they get older. Have a lovely Easter everyone!

In Year 5 in Maths, the children have been learning how to calculate the perimeter of rectilinear shapes, building their confidence in solving more complex problems. In Literacy, the children completed and published their final writes based on their cracking contraptions. They also created presentations to showcase their machines, thinking carefully about how to persuade others to buy their inventions. The creativity and effort has been fantastic! In Geography, we completed our unit on volcanoes. The children really enjoyed learning about the impact of living near an active volcano and were able to discuss both the benefits and risks. On Thursday, we had a special treat. Paul from the North Devon Manufacturers Association visited and set the children a fun engineering challenge. They were asked to design and build a spaghetti superstructure suspension bridge. We hope you all have a wonderful Easter break. We look forward to welcoming the children back on Monday 20th April. Please remember that on the first day back, we have a trip to the Burton Art Gallery. Children will need to be collected from the gallery at 3:00pm.

Year 6 have started writing a story, based on The Ice Bear by Jackie Morris. They have chosen a different setting and characters. In Maths, it’s been all about shape and angles this week – it became more complicated as the week progressed and detective skills, working out what information the questions actually gave us, improved significantly. Revision is going well – we keep recapping skills. Keep going over your grammar terminology and those spelling patterns.

Have a great Easter!
