From Jeremy Cooper and all the children and staff
This week in Turtles and Dolphins we have been learning about Spring. We went down to the woods to look for signs of spring. We have found out about the frog cycle and the chicken cycle. We have also created pictures of daffodils. Today, we walked down to the library to change our library books.
In Year 1 this week we are still enjoying the slime book! We managed to have another go at making slime this week and the children had to read the instructions and ingredients really carefully. We have been recapping what verbs are and managed to spot lots of them in our instructions! We’ve had a go at writing our own sentences and underlining the verb as well as becoming very bossy and writing commands! The children really loved doing a bossy voice when reading their commands. In Maths we have been looking at mass and volume. We loved using the balance scales to weigh different items in the classroom and record which was heavier or lighter. We then used cubes to measure the mass of different objects in the classroom. We were super lucky on Tuesday to take part in a zoom call where we learnt all about Judaism. We learnt so much and got to ask lots of our own questions.
Year 2 have been learning to play the p-bones (plastic trombones) and enjoyed performing in a video which has been added to the Google Classroom for you to enjoy! Thanks to Mrs Halloway for teaching us to play. They have also been busy publishing their writing into a class book about animals. It’s on the writing display near the hall of you are able to take a look. They have started looking at a new book called ‘Sylvia and Bird’ which is a lovely story about friendship. In Maths, they have been using milliletres and litres to measure capacity. In their Science work they have been looking at different materials, whilst in Geography they were comparing the UK to India.
Year 3 have enjoyed their cooking sessions this week. They made a sweet and sour stir fry with Pete (The Asda Man) and then soup in outdoor learning. Many have said they are going to make this at home! We have drafted our own quest stories and are busy editing these so they can be published next week. In maths we have completed all the end of term assessments and began our unit of work on mass and capacity. We have started to think about our new science topic for next term which is plants and in our geography session we looked at what makes a good environment to live in; we focused on the three areas in Appledore. Next week will be the last swimming session: all have had fun over this term’s lessons and made good progress.
In Year 4 this week, the children did a ‘free write’ in English where we watched a video called Something Fishy and the children planned and wrote the story completely independently. It was great to see their very own imaginative and creative ideas as well as consolidating lots of key concepts taught that the children should be using in their writing in Year 4. In Maths, we have finished fractions and moved onto decimals where we have learnt about tenths and dividing a one and two digit number by 10. In Geography, the children compared two different earthquakes in Haiti and Chile and they wrote a comparison piece of writing explaining how the largest earthquakes don’t always cause the most destruction. In Science, the children created their own classification keys to identify living things. In PE, the children were VERY excited to get the apparatus out in the hall where the children did some rope swinging and climbing!
This week in Year 5, the children have been working hard in maths, learning how to order decimals and developing their understanding of percentages. In literacy, the children have almost finished their final writes for their own cracking contraptions, using all of the skills they have developed throughout the unit. This includes using the passive voice, causal conjunctions, and a range of connective devices to create impact on the reader. The children have been very creative and imaginative with both their designs and their writing. These will be displayed in the corridor very soon! In Geography, we compared Heimaey in Iceland with Appledore, focusing on the physical and human similarities and differences between the two places. We used a Venn diagram to show our knowledge. The children also enjoyed a visit from Pete from Asda, where they prepared a healthy stir fry and learned more about healthy eating.
Year 6 have completed work on percentages, decimals and fractions this week as well as looking into calculating angles. In Literacy, they have been writing about a meeting between two characters based on Harry Potter. They had to include descriptions of the characters and setting. In reading, they have been going over 3 mark questions and looking at how to improve answers: some great improvements so far. Revision will begin in class just before the holidays – it’s time to make sure you know your grammar and maths facts. Please remind children to ask in class if there are things that they are unsure about.
