Newsletter for the week ending Friday 9th October
A lovely busy week that included trips and much, much more, so please read our Around the Classes section to find out.
We have been made aware of the following information regarding the series Spy Dogs/Pups and Spy Cat books written by Andrew Cope. These books contain a link to a website which contains highly pornographic content. The book asks children to explore the website to find more about the characters in the book. It appears the website identified (on the back or inside page) has now been compromised and takes users to a pornographic website with no age verification.

AROUND THE CLASSES
This week in Turtles and Dolphins we have started a new topic ‘Autumn’. We talked about what we know about Autumn and how this season fits into the cycle of seasons. We also talked about why some animals hibernate and what they do to get ready to hibernate. We collected some leaves and printed some repeating leaf patterns. We have also made some pumpkins using salt dough. Today, we walked to the library to change our library books.
Year 1 have had a great week this week! In PE we are doing dance this half term and the class have been brilliant at making standing shapes and floor shapes as well as changing their dancing to suit the music. In Maths we have started our addition and subtraction topic so we have started by recapping part whole models. In writing we have been writing simple sentences and really working on our capital letters, finger spaces and full stops. We have been writing about what the animals did at the zoo in our book. In topic this week we were learning about the Arctic and Antarctica, the children have been really interested in this topic and we’ve had some really great discussions. This week we looked at polar bears and how they can survive living in the cold. We shared lots of great facts!
Year 2 had a brilliant time at Rosemoor Gardens on Thursday. They looked for signs of different animals and then went on a hunt in the woods for different creatures. There was even time for a play in the play areas and time to plant some radish seeds. Everyone was brilliantly behaved and listened carefully. Thank you to our parent helpers for coming with us. In English, they have been reading a new book called ‘How to wash a woolly mammoth’. They had a great time putting pictures from the story in order, interviewing each other and washing toy woolly mammoths. In Maths, they have been looking at number bonds and related facts. They have been practising their songs and their small play for the Harvest Festival next week and are looking forward to showing you.
Thank you to everyone who came to St. Mary’s church on Wednesday to celebrate harvest with our key stage 2 children. It was a lovely occasion and you were a fabulous audience! The children preformed wonderfully and were clearly relishing every moment of it. We will now be turning our thoughts to our Christmas presentation. So sorry to be mentioning that word already!
In Year 4 this week, the children have come to the end of place value in Maths where they have consolidated lots of skills they’ve learnt and will be moving onto some work on bar charts and area and perimeter which links with their Geography of ‘being sustainable’. The children will look at some data about the amount of electricity measured in kWh that a school uses in a school day which they will interpret and they will use what they learn about area and perimeter to design their very own solar farm! In English, we have thoroughly unpicked the story Little Evie in the Wild Wood and we will move onto learning about prepositional phrases and fronted adverbials to uplevel their writing. In Computing, the children are using what they have learnt about the internet by creating their own Google Slides about “How to live sustainably” which will be used as an assessment piece to consolidate their learning for Computing and Geography. The children also took part in some outdoor learning where they completed a survey on how to make the school more sustainable. They also took part in some Maths where they had to calculate how much money they would save if they reduced their energy consumption by a tenth to show the importance of cutting energy to save money as well as the environment. As well as this, the children have been busy rehearsing for the Harvest festival which was an absolute delight to watch and I’m sure you’re all very proud parents!
This week, alongside rehearsing for and performing in the Harvest Festival, Year 5 have been busy finishing and publishing their wonderful short stories inspired by The Tear Thief. The children worked very hard on these, and we are excited to display their finished pieces in the corridor for everyone to enjoy. In maths, we have begun a new unit on addition and subtraction. So far, the children have recapped column addition and practised adding whole numbers with more than four digits. They did brilliantly with this and were great at explaining their mathematical thinking. In geography, we explored what the UK imports from China and what China imports from the UK, discovering that the Chinese market values luxury, designer, and handcrafted products from Britain. To build on this, the children worked in teams to design their own local product that might appeal to the Chinese market and presented their ideas confidently to the class. In values we had a class discussion about lending, borrowing, loans, debt and interest and reflected on questions people could ask themselves before they take out a loan or borrow money. A great week!
Year 6 In maths, they have been looking at common factors, which are links to times tables; they need to know these facts off by heart! In Literacy, they are still writing their own pieces, relating to The Princesses Blanket, and editing them – we hope to share a few soon. In science, Year 6 learnt about Carl Linnaeus who developed a system of classifying animals and plants. In Geography they were finding out how climate change in Greenland was met by opposing views from two people who had different experiences. The Harvest Festival took place on Wednesday afternoon and Year 6 performed their song and acted well.
